Dec 11 2020: Bringing Rotherham Minster to new life with special Winter project

SOUTH Yorkshire film maker and multi media specialist Wayne Sables and long time collaborator Steve Pool have created a new winter celebration for Rotherham Town centre.

Based around the themes of Joy, Hope and Gratitude, the project - which has been made for Rotherham Council - is a projection mapping work sees a series of digitally created animations projected onto the town’s historic Minster.

The project will appear live at the Minster on December 15, 16 and 17, with Wayne also making a filmed version of the spectacular art work that will be available throughout the Christmas period on the council’s website and social media platforms.

“The aim of the mapping project was to recognise the challenging year that everybody has experienced but at the same time to also highlight and celebrate the qualities of joy, hope and gratitude that have helped us all to come this far,” said Wayne.

“It’s all about hope for the future, joy in our communities and gratitude for those many people who have worked so hard for us all throughout the pandemic, the frontline and key workers who kept everything going.

“The project also features some special animations that will have a major impact for anybody who knows Rotherham Minster and its stained glass windows.

“In a time of darkness, I’d like to think that we have created something magical for everybody to enjoy.”

Projection Mapping is the digital technique that can turn anything from cars to buildings and natural landmarks into display spaces with the use of projected images, films and digital content.
