Dec 11 2020: Westbourne School 2021 Scholarship Day

APPLICATIONS are being taken for the annual scholarship places at Sheffield independent school Westbourne.

The city’s only non-selective independent school for children aged three to 16 always offers a limited number of discounted scholarship places for entry at Year 7.

The scholarships are an opportunity for more able pupils at any school in the area whose parents are considering the option of the independent sector at secondary school level.

Scholarship are awarded to recognise academic achievement and are awarded in the fields of academic achievement, music, drama, sport and all round ability.

The scholarships awarded will be based upon examinations and assessments to be taken on various dates in January - with an application deadline of January 11.

However, the school stresses to parents and pupils that entry to Westbourne Senior School is not dependent upon sitting these exams.

The academic scholarship exams consist of papers in English and Maths as well as a computerised baseline assessment.

The English paper is a creative writing task and the Maths paper is designed to test aptitude and problem-solving skills rather than breadth of knowledge acquired to date.
Recipients of Sports Scholarships at Westbourne are usually involved at club level in at least one sport.
The school also asks all scholarship applicants to create a short video or document explaining a bit about themselves, their interests and hobbies.

The awards are based largely upon the results in these assessments so the number awarded does vary from year to year depending upon performance.

Scholarships offer potential students the chance to join the school with a good financial saving, although the value of any award is at the discretion of Westbourne Headmaster John Hicks.

There are also some bursaries available to applicants showing outstanding levels of achievement.
