Dec 08 2020: James gets on his bike for a Roundabout trip to Whitby

IT’S cold, it’s wet, it’s December…hardly the time that most people would be thinking of a day by the seaside.

And even if they were, the majority wouldn’t be anticipating that the perfect way to make the 105 mile journey would be on a bike!

But that’s exactly what cyclist James Tsirikos and his friends Tom Newman and Jim Green did when they used pedal power to complete the journey from Sheffield to Whitby.

And already James has managed to raise £460 for South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout.

“Actually, it couldn’t have gone any better and despite a bit of drizzle and it being freezing cold, we had a really good day,” said account manager James, who lives in Ecclesall.

“We set off from Ecclesall Road at 6am, powered all the way up to York and had a quick stop-off.

“We then set off for the York Moors and that's when it started to get dark and scary and it felt like it was all uphill from that point onwards.

“Once we got off the moors we seemed to go through every back and beyond village and town surrounding Whitby, with some horrible hills thrown in and our legs were jelly by this point.

“But then, suddenly, we were just two miles from Whitby, we made it over the horizon and we were there!

“I'm over the moon with how much i've managed to raise but I'd love to crack the £500 mark before Christmas

“And I’d definitely like to do another ride in 2021 - though perhaps when the conditions are a little kinder.”
