Sep 09 2020: Chris and Oli get on their bikes for Roundabout cycle challenge

KEEN cyclists Chris Ware and Oli Giles had planned a fundraising European bike ride in support of their favourite charity…but then the COVID-19 pandemic struck!

Instead, they’re leaving their passports at home and getting on their bikes as they take on a fresh cycling challenge, pedalling to the the four corners of England as they raise cash for South Yorkshire Youth Homelessness charity Roundabout.

And every mile they successfully complete will be helping young homeless people to follow suit and take to two wheels.

The 1,200 plus mile route - reaching heights of up to 65,000 feet above sea level -will take the friends from Sheffield to Carlisle, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Dover and Land's End, a journey that will cover England’s furthest points north, south, east and west.

Setting off on September 19, the pair expect to reach the Land’s End finish by October 10 - officially World Homeless Day - and have set themselves a fundraising target of £5,000.

“We think cycling is the best way to get around and those who have no access to a bike are missing out,” said Chris, who is part of the Roundabout Supporting Tenants team.

“Because of this we're raising money for Roundabout so that young people with the least in Sheffield can get a bike and travel in the best way possible.

“Having a bike can mean so much to a young person and can give them the chance to independently access education, employment and training opportunities, along with encouraging them to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

“The money raised will be used to get our young people active and subsidise second hand bikes for them in partnership with Recycle Bikes, based in Heeley.”

The pair are planning to cover at least 65 miles per day, with a couple of rest days to help them keep on top form.

Along the route, their plan is to stay with friends and fellow cycling enthusiasts, keeping the cost of the trip to a minimum.

“It’s a challenge but we’re sure we can do it,” said Chris. “And we hope that by the time we finish we’ll have raised enough money to really make a difference to the lives of young people supported by Roundabout.”
