May 16 2013: New student music festival supports top children's charity
A NEW music festival organised by members of the University of Sheffield Students’ Union will raise money for leading children’s charity Safe@Last.
The Contours Festival will take place on June 6 from 2pm to 4am at four venues in the heart of Sheffield - the Raynor Lounge in The University of Sheffield’s Student's Union building, the University Arms, the Harley, and the DQ nightclub.
Mike McQuillan, Assistant Events Manager at Sheffield University Students’ Union, said: “ Last year a survey was conducted asking Sheffield University students what extra-curricular experience they would like to get involved with and one of the most referenced things was a music festival.
“In February we began a recruitment campaign asking students to volunteer to be part of a brand new music festival.
“The name, acts, venues, design, all aspects of the festival have been chosen by the volunteers, with myself and other Students’ Union staff offering support and guidance to the team.
“It’s a hugely exciting project which sees the Contours team working with Sheffield Raising and Giving (RAG) to raise money for Safe@Last and it is one we hope will leave a lasting legacy.
“We’re really hoping that all Sheffielders will show an interest and come and participate in the Festival’s inaugural year!”
Showcasing the huge range of music available in Sheffield, the Raynor Lounge will feature indie/rock bands and the University Arms will have folk/acoustic music in the gardens.
In the evening, the University Arms indoor stage features heavy metal bands, while running through to 4amm, DQ will feature club music (house and techno) while the Harley will provide alternative sounds, including reggae, electro swing, hip-hop, drum and bass and soul music.
Confirmed acts so far include: Al Pearson, Peter Delchar, Patrick Rose, Sigrid and the Family Band, James Tait, Jupiter in Jars, Zacc Rogers, Tom Swannick from Puzzled, Speedz, The Indecision, Jenova Collective, and Fifty Spence.
Tickets will be £4 advance or £5 on the door and will be available from www.sheffieldsu.com and the Box Office in the Students’ Union building.
