Mar 16 2012: New plans for historic Middlewood Hospital Chapel
PLANS for the long awaited restoration and redevelopment of the historic Middlewood Hospital chapel have been submitted to Sheffield City Council.
The Grade II listed building, which was opened in 1872 and formed part of the former Middlewood psychiatric hospital complex, has been abandoned for many years as the rest of the site was developed as major north Sheffield housing project the Wadsley Park Village.
Now, though, award winning city architectural design consultancy Coda Studios has submitted ambitious plans that will see the imposing Victorian chapel converted into a mixture of town houses and apartments.
And in a unique extension to the 19th century structure, a selection of partially underground eco-friendly bungalows will be created beneath the building.
“We believe this development will allow the chapel to retain its full visual impact but at the same time bring it fully into the 21st century,” said Coda Studios Managing Director David Cross.
“Knowing how much this building means and its historic importance to the area, we started full consultation with the community in 2009.
“We have also undergone extensive pre-application negotiations prior to submitting our planning proposals.
“The work we are proposing will retain all the character and interest of the original building with the new building underpinning the restoration of the chapel site.
“Once completed, the restoration will provide a real focal point for Wadsley Park Village and preserve a site of great historical importance for future generations.”
