Jan 31 2012: Battle on the ice as Winter Varsity returns

Every year, students from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallan University go head to head in the annual Varsity competition, which sees both universities compete against each other through sporting contests.

These contests span 30 sports, 70 fixtures and 15 venues, with more than 1,500 students competing and more than 9,000 people supporting them.

Winter Varsity 2012 begins on February 11 as opposing hockey teams take to the ice at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena.

Throughout the rest of the year, the two university ice hockey teams play alongside each other as the Sheffield Bears.

But for one week only, as part of Winter Varsity, they go head-to-head and play all out for their respective universities in an event that really will see the clash of the 'steel city' titans.

The hockey begins with a 1pm reception at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, February 11, with Face-off at 2pm.
