May 06 2010: Healthy teeth need more than the Tooth Fairy's magic!

YOU could put your faith in the Tooth Fairy…or you could depend on better dentistry!
This month sees the launch of new Hollywood comedy Tooth Fairy – starring former wrestler The Rock, now better known as Dwayne Johnson.
But at Sheffield’s Redmires Dental Care the message to both parents and children is that in life as at the movies, good dental hygiene is important from the earliest possible age.
“Evidence suggests that the later you get your first cavity, the better your lifetime of oral health will be,” says Dr Alison Foster, of the Redmires practice.
“Teeth grow healthy and decay is totally preventable and although regular visits to the dentist are important, much of the work to keep teeth and gums healthy is done at home.
“Parents should not underestimate their role in the supervision of the twice-daily tooth-brushing routine. The recommended age to be keeping a watchful eye on your children as they brush is up to seven years old.
“As children naturally prefer sweet food, the challenge is to balance their diet by giving them the food they love while looking out for their teeth and gums.
“The trick is to encourage them to eat sweets at the end of the meal, rather than constantly nibbling throughout the day.”
Other top tips recommended by Dr Foster include:
· Take children to the dentist from as young an age as possible to familiarise them with the sounds, sights and smells before they even have to sit in the chair.
· Brush with a small amount of toothpaste containing fluoride for two minutes, twice a day.
· Supervise children’s brushing up until at least the age of seven.
· A small amount of cheese is a great way to finish a meal as it neutralises acid levels in the mouth that attack and soften enamel.
