Mar 11 2010: A year of growth for CIMA

THE Sheffield branch of The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is launching a major new membership involvement and public awareness drive for 2010.
CIMA is the world’s largest and leading professional body of management accountants, with 172,000 members and students in 165 countries.
And as part of its campaign to increase its profile and boost member involvement throughout South Yorkshire over the next 12 months, it will be working with Sheffield public relations consultant John Highfield.
He will be helping to promote the organisation’s busy annual calendar of events and helping to raise awareness of what CIMA members are achieving both locally and nationally.
“One of the problems we have faced as an organisation is that people do not even know what management accountants actually do,” said branch secretary Paul Sykes.
“We are financially-trained business managers, people who look forward, make decisions and make things happen, rather than keeping score or counting beans.
“We have members who work in many different environments, including industry, commerce and not for profit organisations.”
CIMA constantly updates its qualification, professional experience requirements and Continuing Professional Development programme, ensuring that members and students are first choice for employers who are recruiting financially trained business leaders.

Covering Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley, the organisation currently has a total of 1,284 members – both professionals and students - across the region but Paul is confident that companies could add value to their business by taking advantage of CIMA’s seminars and other networking events.
“Historically, we hold around eight events a year, focusing principally on topical and technical issues and many of our events qualify for CPD,” said Paul.
“However, this is the 21st Century and we believe that the role of the management accountant and of CIMA is more relevant than ever before. We need to raise awareness of what we can do to contribute to the region’s success on so many levels.
“We believe that communicating with our members by email and the community by chance is not good enough so working with an organisation with the track record and connections of John Highfield PR will enable us to publicise our annual calendar of events even more positively and help strengthen our presence across South Yorkshire.”
