Feb 10 2010: Chips with everything for Gilbert and Sullivan fans
IT’S a gem of Victorian comic operetta…and it comes with a third act serving of fish and chips!
Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society are on the move from their usual home at Sheffield University Drama Studio to the Montgomery Theatre in the city centre’s Surrey Street for their next show, G&S favourite Ruddigore, which runs from April 14 to 17.
And to make sure the audience accompanies them on their journey to a new venue they’ve decided to throw in the tasty first night only incentive of a fish and chip supper.
Society chairman Richard McKeown, who lives in the village of Ridgeway on the outskirts of Sheffield, came up with the idea of a full evening out, complete with transport and food, in a bid to tempt friends and neighbours to try the comic tale of the supernatural.
“It’s a simple but hopefully effective idea,” said Richard. “The evening will begin with a high tea at Ridgeway Sports and Social Club, then there will be a bus into Sheffield to see the show and at the end it brings everyone back to Ridgeway for fish and chips at the Swan pub.
“It’s a pity we’re not doing The Pirates of Penzance or HMS Pinafore because they do have a nautical theme but the fish and chips will taste just as good at the end of an evening of ghosts and melodrama and for just £15 it’s a great introduction the show and a really good night out.
“And if the idea proves to be a success we might think about doing the same thing from Dore.”
Places on the April 14 Ruddigore coach can be booked by calling 01246 432127 or 01246 431914
