Feb 07 2013: Clegg uncovers a political scandal...in Dore!

THE Deputy Prime Minister embroiled in a scandal with the Lord Chancellor and a Fairy?

It’s not quite as outrageous as it sounds…but it is true that Lib Dem leader and MP for Sheffield Hallam Nick Clegg has given his support to a story that could be a tabloid headline writer’s field day!

Dore Gilbert and Sullivan are now in rehearsals for their next show, a revival of G&S political satire Iolanthe, the comic tale of a beautiful fairy who falls from grace when her relationship with the Lord Chancellor leads to the birth of a half fairy son.

And things get only more complicated when that son decides he’s going to follow his father into Parliament as the world’s first Fairy MP.

The society wrote to all the city’s main political parties asking for their support but only Mr Clegg’s constituency office seemed happy to get involved.

And now flyers for the show, which runs at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street from April 10 to 13, are being sent out with the latest Lib Dem Hallam constituency newsletter.

“We’re delighted that the Lib Dems saw the joke and are now helping us reach a whole new audience,” said the society’s marketing manager Liz Allen.

“This is Gilbert and Sullivan’s most political hit and even today it still seems very topical.

“It would be nice to think that Mr Clegg might even be able to get along to a performance!”

Tickets for Iolanthe, which is also raising money for St Luke’s Hospice, are now available at £11 or £9 concessions. For further information or to download a booking form visit www.doregass.co.uk
